Reasons why Copper loves his new life in Santa Cruz:

1. He now has plenty of windows to look out of...with actual TREES outside, instead of a cement patio.

2. Lazy summer days on the beach with his moms.

3. He gets to wear shades!

5. The WOODS! Hunting! Birds and squirrels and butterflies, oh my!

Reason why Santa Cruz loves Copper:

With the recent budget cuts, Copper is doing his part to clean up our parks! He feels it is his civilian duty to keep the trails free of any sort of food litter or animal waste. No poo left behind! If it is (or once was) food, Copper will be there to eat it up.

So, over the past year, since they shared broke bread together last thanksgiving (or turkey as the case may be). Copper has discovered that Booby is his long lost soulmate.

They are usually together around the house, and most likely you will find them in the same exact position, looking at you with the same expression. In most cases, this is simply too much cuteness to handle.

I am just sharing a glimpse into the window of cuteness that surrounds us.

After a VERY long hiatus...the copper chronicles is back with a bang. Long awaited, long lost, puppy pix! That's right, this is copper the loving sausage as a youngster and a teeny weiner.

I have downloaded a blogging app for my iphone, so hopefully these posts will become more frequent now, and I will be able to provide 'on the go' updates of Copper's whereabouts, for all of his avid fans.

The most recent fun story, is that we took him to the vet yesterday for a 'wound' on his chest, that turned out to be just a nipple! Well, thats 50 bucks down the drain.

While we were basking through the pasta and gelato of Italy, Copper celebrated Halloween at Jan and Dorothea's house. They bought him a beautiful brides outfit, which he wore with pride as all of the trick or treaters came by. He was the hit of the night apparently!

They thought he should wear a dress, since he got to wear a tux at the wedding. We just cant decide which is cuter really!

For the love of Turkey

This past thanksgiving (I do realize its march, but i like to engage in a bit of time travel when it comes to my blog).

This past thanksgiving, Copper and Booby formed a new friendship, a new love for eachother...all through their joint love of turkey.

As the Turkey baked in the oven, they both stood next to eachother all day, waiting for a taste of the succulent browned bird. It was love at first bite, and they have been an inseprable pair ever since. Booby discovered that begging is quite fun and productive, and Copper realized that maybe cats weren't so bad after all...

Copper even decided to go 'greaser' style for the turkey day festivities, as we discovered he had a very wet head and realized the turkey juice had been dripping down the counter onto his head. It formed a nice crusty updo, the 'wet' look, as you can see in the photo below...

Well, Copper managed his duty of ring bearer like a true gentleman. He was very well behaved and sat quietly throughout our whole ceremony. Granted, his handler, Leanna, was feeding him hotdogs the whole time.

He was a very good boy, and as always, very photogenic.

Beauty and the Beach

The Montagno ladies treated Copper to a luxury beach vacation in Santa Cruz this summer.

"Im so happy to be going on a trip you guys! Even if I have to cram into 2 inches of space in the backseat! Beats staying home with my other boring mom who just sits at her computer all day"

Apparently, it started out innocently enough...Copper had sun in his eyes! (so they said). Of course they had to put sunglasses on him so that our sensitive little man would be more comfortable while relaxing on the beach. (this is the story).

See? No harm, no foul, just a happy family enjoying a lazy day by the ocean. Aren't we a cute couple in Dolce & Gabana?

Mega Super Update!

It has been QUITE a full summer for our boy. He has had such an array of new activities that I don't even know where to begin by posting all of the fun and exciting pix we have!

I guess Ill just start at the beginning. This is a little overdue (from May!), but I should note that Copper successfully completed his first training class!!

He did a fantastic job because he is utterly motivated by food. He learned to sit, stand, stay, leave it (not really), lay down, and now, 4 months later, doesnt listen to a word of it since we haven't kept up the training!

Oh well, it was fun while it lasted.

Will be updating all of his summer fun over the course of the next week. Enjoy!

For my birthday celebration, Michelle took Copper and me out on a rowboat in Stowe Lake (Golden Gate Park). Copper loved being rowed around the lake, and took in the scenery and birdwatching from the middle of the boat.

Copper takes the cake for being the lamest excuse for a dog in the world. When confronted by a 4 week old kitten at Leanna's house, who wanted to do a little 'meet and greet', Copper was scared for his life.

The look of fear is unmistakeable. Trembling, biting his lower lip...Copper braces for the mysterious creature that lurks above. He is braced for the worst, his life flashing before his eyes. (click on photo to see enlarged...details are even better)

Copper is soaking up the sun with us at Baker Beach, just admiring the view and eating some watermelon. The temps reached 95 degrees that day!

We tried to get him to swim in the ocean, but he would run away every time a wave would come up to his toes, and would squeal if the water touched him.

Well, Copper has finally caved and decided to be friends with Namu. Namu has tried his darndest for 6 months to cuddle with Copper, and Copper usually kicks him away.

Copper's First Concert

Well, Easter weekend is a big celebration here. Everyone gathers in the park to watch drag queen nuns and bare bottomed easter bunnies frolick and perform sacreligious ceremonies, such as 'jesus look-alike contest'.

In any case, Copper was amused at it all, even though he was very hot and squinty. After a while, he was too distracted by all of the stray Easter chocolates and candy on the ground and I had to take him home.

Peg's Visit to San Francisco

Copper jogs, bouncy and jiggling, into to ocean for the first time in his life! He wasn't quite sure what to make of all that sand and water, but ultimately, his favorite creatures are crustacean, and he himself is part manatee, so he felt right at home.

Good News!

GREAT news in fact. We did a biopsy on a pesky tumor in Copper's mouth last week. Luckily, it came back negative for cancer!! We truly cannot believe this dog has NOTHING wrong with him.

We were convinced he would be a diabetic hyperthyroid liver failed cancer patient puppy. His only sickness, thus far, is homesickness. (and that is currently being treated with ample doses of love and ever increasing amounts of exposure to the great California outdoors...)

So, working from home is turning out to be quite a challenge with four very needy animals. I used to have a little orange shadow, and now I have a big spotted one as well. The two tubbies (poobah and booby), luckily sleep most of the day.

These 2 have become quite a pair, already! They take BFF to a whole new level. Now...apparently there was some inter-species cuddling on the couch a few days ago, but I was not witness to it. I have to carry the camera around at all times it seems...

Interspecies cuddling is the best!! Frank says that now all we need is a goat...

Well, just as copper is getting used to his new 'hotel', the kitties have decided its quite cozy for them as well. I mean, its not like we give THEM fluffy blankets. They see an opportunity and go for it, can't say I blame them. If only it was that easy to get them to go into their own crates come vet appointment time...

Well, I took Copper to the dog park in the Castro today. We have been avoiding it, since the last time we took a friend's dog there we got multiple comments about his ribs showing, even though he is part greyhound. People tend to be very judgemental.

Upon arrival, I felt like I was in middle school all over again. The proud pedigree dog parents all in a group in the center of the ring, all looked over at my smiling tub of lard. They looked at him, then at me, and I heard one of them say 'its a shame'. Then they looked up at me to see if I am equally tubby, confused that I am not.

To them, I am obviously a bad dog owner. I tried to strike it up with one lady, and then she warmed up a bit, knowing the whole story. Its amazing that death is the only thing that will melt people's judgments and assumptions. Definitely had to play the DDC today (dead daddy card).

Copper, however, is starting to learn to run around with other dogs, so that's a good start. Mostly, he just wants to be by my side.

Copper is settling in just fine...This is how he and Michelle fall asleep watching TV every night. Luckily, I get to be the one awake taking pictures. It's really too cute for words. Now we just have to wait until all 3 cats decide its safe to join us...then our little farm will truly be complete.

Well, what can we say. We like to dress our animals up, emasculate them, whatever suits our fancy to give us all a good laugh. Copper is such an easy target. I can't wait until Christmas to make him into a reindeer, santa....maybe our little helper elf? He'll have to shed a few more pounds before fitting into a pair of green tights however.

This is his friend the octopus. Copper likes only his crustacean or ocean-residing toys....crabs, lobsters, etc. We should get along just fine as sushi is my favorite food as well. We already have a lot in common.

This site is to share cute Copper photos, and also to chronicle his massive weight loss. He arrived at 80 lbs. He is down in one week to 77.3. Its a start!. It's "The Biggest Loser: Canine Edition", except there is only one contestant.

Currently, when dog snobs in San Francisco hint that we should put him on a diet, we retort that he is a rare breed...part Britanny Spaniel, part Manatee. That usually does the trick.

Arrival

Michelle and I were both very excited for Copper's arrival on Monday night. (we actually were staring out the window for about 30 minutes waiting...)

He was driven across the country by Royal Paws pet moving service. They were very good and he drove for 40 hours straight through! With pee breaks every 4 hours. Still, by the time he arrived in SF, he was a pretty tired boy...

We welcome our new doggie, Copper, into our home. After his courageous cross-country journey from Ohio to San Francisco, he has begun his process of being transformed into a big city pup.

This blog will chronicle his adaptation, his (hopefully) dramatic weight loss, and his new life with his two mommies, (although, at this point, he still very much misses his Daddy). We hope he will grow to love us and our family as much as we already adore him.
